The short answer
From Salvador there are three routes. The catamaran ferry takes about 2h30 and leaves from the Terminal Marítimo behind Mercado Modelo — this is what most visitors take. The land-and-boat transfer takes about 3h30, picks up at the airport, and avoids open sea. Light aircraft reach the island in 25 minutes at a much higher price.
Landing at Salvador airport and heading straight to the island? Take the transfer. Already in the city centre or Pelourinho? Take the ferry.

Catamaran ferry
Recommended- Departs from:
- Terminal Marítimo, Salvador (behind Mercado Modelo)
- Best for:
- Travellers already in Salvador city who want the fastest direct route.
- Watch out:
- The second half is open sea and can be rough. Take a tablet if you are prone to seasickness.
Land-and-boat transfer
Airport pickup- Departs from:
- Salvador airport (SSA) or your hotel
- Best for:
- Arrivals straight off a flight, and anyone who would rather avoid open water.
- Watch out:
- Ferry across the bay, coach down Itaparica, then a 15-minute speedboat — three legs, more moving parts.
Light aircraft
Fastest- Departs from:
- Salvador airport (SSA)
- Best for:
- Short trips where time matters more than budget.
- Watch out:
- Considerably more expensive, strict luggage limits, weather-dependent.

Check availability for your dateTaking the ferry, step by step
- 1
Book ahead
Reserve your crossing before you arrive in Salvador, especially between December and March. Sailings sell out days in advance in high season.
- 2
Get to the Terminal Marítimo
The terminal sits behind Mercado Modelo in the Comércio district — about 10 minutes by taxi from Pelourinho, or 40 minutes from the airport. Arrive 40 minutes before departure.
- 3
Check in with your digital voucher
Show the QR code on your phone along with your passport. There is nothing to print.
- 4
Cross the bay (about 2h30)
The first stretch is sheltered inside the Baía de Todos os Santos; the second is open sea and can be choppy. Cabins are air-conditioned with assigned seats.
- 5
Arrive at the island pier
Wheelbarrow porters wait at the pier to carry luggage to your pousada — the island has no cars, and this is the normal way bags move. Expect a small cash tip.
Common mistakes to avoid
Getting back to Salvador
Both routes run in reverse. The catamaran leaves Morro de São Paulo in the morning and early afternoon, reaching Salvador roughly 2h30 later. The land-and-boat transfer runs to a similar schedule and can drop you directly at the airport.
Give yourself a buffer. Sailings depend on sea conditions, and the Port Authority can suspend them at short notice. If you have an international flight home, plan to be back in Salvador the day before — or at the very least on the first boat out.
